Bowling for Love
Wednesday 23rd September 2009
Produced by Katie Burningham
A montage portrait that explores the world of bowls and the relationships - sporting and romantic - that are formed both on and off the green. The feature will offer insights into a community of older people who are still active and holding onto the promises of life and love.

"As unhurriedly as the game itself, the programme sedately contrasts the running and upkeep of a provincial bowls club with the love lives of its members. While the calvacade of sad stories is sometimes hard to bear (it's hard not to feel choked up at the sound of a dignified gent candidly discussing his late wife's descent into dementia), the overall message is uplifting and totally contrary to the idea that finding a partner is impossible once grey becomes one's predominant hair colour. As a reminder that romance isn't just for the young and that life goes on after bereavement, this is hard to beat."
Tom Cole, Radio Times, 23 September 2009
"...she [Katie Burningham] saw love bloom, friendships blossom and now draws us
into these matches, the bowling ones as well as the romances, with
gentle tact, affection and admiration."
Gillian Reynolds, The Telegraph, 23 September 2009
"...one woman explained her story in quiet fragments, trying to sum up the vastness of loneliness. We heard the new partner playing bowls together, over the sounds of commentary, laughter, teasing and encouragement. A rich sense of togetherness was this heartwarming programme's lasting impression."
