Something Understood: The Singing Manifesto
11 January 2009
Presented by The Kitchen Sisters
Produced by Alan Hall
At some point in every interview recorded by American radio’s most celebrated production duo, the Kitchen Sisters, they ask the interviewee to sing – a favourite song, a lullaby, a tune laden with memories. Through their series such as ‘Lost and Found Sound’, ‘Hidden Kitchens’ and, now, ‘The Secret Life of Girls’, they’ve found that singing achieves an ‘accelerated intimacy’ that cuts to the heart of a person. In this special edition, recorded in San Francisco, Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva step out from behind the microphone to reflect on how their distinctive approach starts with the voice and results in ‘composed radio’.
