Written in Stone

19 August 2009
Presented by Llewelyn Morgan
Produced by Katie Burningham

Producer Katie Burningham Llewelyn Morgan explores the significance of an inscribed stone that lies at the heart of Afghanistan's cultural and political heritage.  The Rabatak Inscription currently stands at the entrance to the National Museum in Kabul, having been re-discovered by a hippy biker-turned- war lord in the 1990s.

'It's Radio 4 so there's no Indiana Jones-style whip-cracking, but do expect echoing museums, enlightening interviews and an intriguing historical expose.'
Gary Rose, Radio Times choice, 15 August

'...a timely alternative perspective on Afghanistan.  Llewelyn Morgan's report of the discovery of the Rabatak Inscription wasn't simply about the far-distant past.  At the very least, as one contributor put it, the stone and inscription challenges the image of Afghanistan we see in the news.  "We have a rich past history", he said, "and we are not a country only looking for war."'
