Hardeep Singh Kohli's Alternative Census

25 February 2011
Presented by Hardeep Singh Kohli
Produced by Katie Burningham

Producer Katie Burningham Hardeep Singh Kohli goes behind the doors of households in England, Scotland and Wales to create a unique portrait of life in Britain today - a counterpart to the 2011 census.

With questions that range from the intimate to the irreverent, from the factual to the emotional, Hardeep Singh Kohli undertakes the bold and sincere task of chronicling and comparing the hopes, fears, joy, sadness, struggles, achievements and the everyday experiences that make us who we are.

"...the result is a terrific set of fleeting insights into lives. In the most recent programme, [Hardeep] visited Great Yarmouth and spoke to Derek and Barbara, a couple in their 70s. The interview was a stark reminder not to judge books by covers, or people on radio by their voices; in this case, down to earth, settled, mature, ordinary. Then Derek mentioned that he works as a "male maid", a term he had to explain. "You work as a maid in a maid's outfit," he said. "I'm a transvestite, you see." It was one of those stare-at-the-radio moments."

Elisabeth Mahoney, The Guardian, 7th March 2011

"[Hardeep's] empathetic, conversational style encourages some fascinating responses"
