Derek and Barbara, a couple in their 70s. The interview was a stark
reminder not to judge books by covers, or people on radio by their
voices; in this case, down to earth, settled, mature, ordinary. Then
Derek mentioned that he works as a "male maid", a term he had to
explain. "You work as a maid in a maid's outfit," he said. "I'm a
transvestite, you see." It was one of those stare-at-the-radio moments." |
